It was at least 20 or 25 hours into my time with Assetto Corsa that I could actually rely on putting down 8 clean laps per race, and even then its still a challenge.

Yes you can play Assetto with a controller but depending on the car, it can be very difficult to stay on the road. I play on Xbox btw. Steering wheel is preferred for Assetto but you can add stability control and traction control, I usually play with traction set to FACTORY and stability control ENABLED.

Tbh I tried playing AC with a controller and didn't like it. It was also made more for a wheel than a controller. It's better in ACC though, I tried it in both games as well. Honestly, you'd probably have more fun saving and buying a second-hand wheel than saving and buying lots of console games.
Unfortunately, as fine as Assetto Corsa is, it's a hassle to play it with a controller. Each car, each track, you will have to tweak settings to have a half decent experience. I remember creating elaborate notes for settings when I used to play it with my controller. It's not worth it, it takes the joy away from the game. mxUd.
