#3 · Jan 21, 2016 I've owned mine for probably 3 years now and I love it. 2005 to 2008 was the first version of the 2.5 5 cylinder which apparently it has a timing chain problem but I think it's all in how often you maintenance the engine. As per the recordings and the field data, the VW 2.5 engine will last up to 200000 miles, or even more with proper and regular maintenance. On average, the longevity of a VW 2.5 engine is up to 280,000 miles. A new Volkswagen Jetta‘s quality and condition will allow it to last at least 150,000 miles.
From the VW techs and Indy guys I know, the 2.5 has been a very reliable engine. Big oil sump, pretty easy on oil, and in its current form, not too many weak links. I have a feeling if I keep it long enough, my 2012 will fall apart before the 2.5 really gives me trouble.
We believe the average longevity of the 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine by Volkswagen should be about 280,000 miles. This is a fair figure. The engine can go more, but sometimes it's really expensive to drive more miles. We believe that buying a vehicle with more than 200K miles on it is not wise.
