Read the manual and buy exactly what it specifies (period). I have a KTM 450 Exc and read up on this same issue. For mine it is the Motorex 20w50 since i live in so cal. Although manufacturers may have the same viscosity (ex 10w40), there are additives like graphite that are added for optimal engine wear based on your engi
Feb 4, 2004. Oddometer: 1,590. Location: Eastern YahooLand. Markozero, I rode a dual sport ride at the last of October last year in Colorado and Utah with a bunch of "dual sport" bikers (think 400+ pound porkers Vs. my 250 pound 500). Between 55 and 70 there is almost zero vibration on my 500.
Spud786. When dealing with ktm parts, you not only have to consider (wear), but that they make stuff so light and thin, Metal fatigue is a much stronger issue than wear. But as Long as the air filtration is good, and you warm the motor of well, and change the oil as recommended, up to 500 hours is pretty safe.
We asked Honda and they said that the CRF450L has an oil change interval of 600 miles and a valve check interval of 1,800 miles. While that seems short when viewed as a street bike, when thinking about trail bikes or dirt-bike-based dual-sports, that’s changing the oil after six 100-mile rides, which is well within reason. Ignore the service intervals for eveything. Just keep the air filter clean, change the oil and clean the 2 screens every 250 to 500 miles and the oil filters every 4th oil change. The camchain wears quite slowly, will last 4000 miles or so if you are lucky. This is how to check it:
KTM EXC 450/500. Based on our own experience we suggest somewhere along the 2,000 to 2,500 km mark when travelling for an enduro engine like the EXC 450/500 with 1.5 litres of engine oil. I can hear you say that the 2017 onwards engines have only 1.2 litres of engine oil but we have fitted a larger clutch cover which is stronger than OEM and

Also, keep in mind that intervals can be extended significantly based on how you’re actually riding the bike. Low stress street riding extends intervals significantly. baconandtheguacamole • 3 yr. ago. CRF450L service intervals are 600 miles for oil and 1,800 for valve check. Still pretty frequent unfortunately.
Its 80% trail 20% road bike. A versys or african twin or vstrom or some other ADV bike is perfect for what you are looking for. Those are great pavement bikes that never need maintenance. The 450 needs about 4 times as much maintenance as the 250 or any of the 650 dualsport or adventure bikes.
Oil Change Frequency - KTM 450 EXC 2009 The recommendation of KTM "full synthetic oil and change it every 15 hours with the filter. I change it every 20 hours with the filter, and use ELF MOTO 4 XT TECH 10W50, never a problem. 1- Wich is your Oil Change Frequency? 2- Do you change always the filter each time? 3- Wich Oil are you using? The second is when you clock between five to 10 hours to bring it back for a first service. It might not seem much time but these first hours are important for the life of an engine, the bedding in process of the whole bike and importantly to check for faults. Enduro21 follows the whole first service process at a KTM authorised dealer with a Maybe KTM owners aren't woke on truck oil? Heh heh. Of course I kid. Anyway, I have a 250 exc-f that is almost ready for its first oil change. I have used truck oil in everything I own for longer than some of the peeps on this thread have been alive. There are quite few other factors at play here as well when it comes to maintenance intervals. Cam design and how it interacts with the valve train will greatly alter valve service intervals as will material usage and density. The list goes on and on as to why the WR250r has a lower maintenance schedule. The crankshafts with strokes of 63.4mm (450 XC-W) and 72.0mm (500 XC-W/EXC) with ultra-lightweight conrods are made by Pankl from special high-tensile strength steel. The crankshaft employs a LJPD.
